READY LATER IN THE SEASON. Astelias are architectural or feature plants with their dramatic evergreen sword-like leaves; those of Silver Shadow have a very striking silvery tinge - in fact, it's the best silver form yet and a good vigorous one, to boot, so will eventually form a spectacular clump. Stylish in a patio pot. Sheltered sunny spot. Fertile well drained soil. 3 feet. 2 litre pot.

Very vigorous in our experience, clumping up very quickly to form a substantial specimen.
Avoid winter wet and extreme cold. If in doubt, protect your precious Astelia in the worst weather or grow it in a pot so you can enjoy it indoors in the darker months.
Not much to do other than stand back and admire it. Which is nice.
Peter van Rijssen is clearly mad as a hatter, but there are undoubtedly some very nice specimens of Astelia Silver Shadow in his glasshouse:
Astelia Chathamica Silver Shadow is a clump forming frost hardy evergreen perennial grown for its silvery arching foliage suitable for sun or semi-shade.
