Astrantia Ruby Cloud is a newish and very good variety, with a nicely tight neat habit to the clump of divided foliage, which will reach about 18 inches in height, with the flower stalks adding another 6 inches to that.
Astrantias rejoice in quite a selection of common names, among them Hattie's Pincushion - the pincushion bit we get, as this refers to the domed centre of the flowerhead, but who Hattie was, we are not so sure. They are also known as masterwort and, rather charmingly, as Melancholy Gentleman. The genus name Astrantia dervies from aster, meaning star in Latin, on account of the flower shape.
Plant care consists of deadheading as required and cutting back old stems in late winter or early spring. Established plants can be divided around the same time.
Astrantia Major Ruby Cloud is a compact hardy perennial with lobed leaves and ruby red flowers from early to mid summer suitable for sun or semi-shade.
