From the United States, where it is known as the sweet pepper bush, Clethra Ruby Spice is an absolute stunner of a shrub. The glossy green foliage is nice enough, but its big moment is those 6 weeks in mid to late summer when it is covered in deep pink flower spikes like so many clove-scented candles. Quite extraordinarily lovely. Sun or semi-shade. Any reasonable soil. 5 feet. 2 litre pot.

We have grown Hummingbird, the white-flowered variety, for some years but have not recently been able to offer Ruby Spice other than on an occasional basis. It's lovely!
Exquisite in appearance and in its scent when in full flower.
Prune (quite hard, if you like) in late winter or early spring, as it flowers on the current year's growth.
Slightly odd video (ends abruptly) that showcases Clethra Ruby Spice rather well:
Clethra Alnifolia Ruby Spice is a hardy shrub with glossy leaves and scented dark pink flowers like candles in mid to late summer suitable for sun or semi-shade.
