POLYSTICHUM SETIFERUM CONGESTUM

POLYSTICHUM SETIFERUM CONGESTUM

from 4.50

A very attractive form of Polystichum Setiferum, this is the dwarf soft shield fern: it is evergreen, with triangular very upright fronds that are dense and overlapping, hence the Congestum bit of the name. Given its size, best to plant it where it won't be overwhelmed by larger neighbours. A tidy fern that won't get out of hand.  Best in light to full shade. Any reasonable soil. 12 in. 2 litre pot.

As mentioned on the page for Polystichum Setiferum, there are quite a few variants on the species, and this has to be one of our favourites among them, with is densely packed, crowded fronds There are times when you want something less imposing than a metre-high clump, and Congestum fits that bill perfectly. It’s got all the inherent ferny charm but on a smaller scale. Good for the edge of a pond or stream or in a rockery, and - given its size - makes a nice pot specimen too. You can read a helpful article on cultivating polystichum ferns here.

Nothing to do on the care front other than remove any old fronds damaged over winter as the new ones emerge. A lovely little specimen.

Polystichum Setiferum Congestum is a compact hardy evergreen fern with dense triangular upright fronds suitable for light to full shade.
