The legendary Tree Fern. You will have seen these in garden centres as hugely expensive soft trunks topped by ferny foliage. Well, this is your chance to take on an exciting long-term project! We offer young plants of Dicksonia Antarctica, just beginning to develop a trunk, which will eventually reach 20 feet in height. Will tolerate some direct sunlight. Acid soil. Available in a 9cm pot.
Dicksonia can actually put on quite a show with large arching fronds when still young plants. Stick one in a big pot and it will look good on the patio or in the conservatory.
If kept outdoors in winter, it may best to fleece it up to protect against harsh weather. Depends a bit on where you live, as here in the soft South we can often leave them out unprotected. The RHS rating suggests it's fine down to -5C.
This video discusses the uses of Dicksonia Antarctica in garden design:
Dicksonia Antarctica is a frost hardy evergreen fern with long arching fronds and a woolly trunk when mature suitable for partial or full shade in acid soil.
