Orange Vanilla Popsicle is probably the best of the bunch in this fairly new series of compact red hot pokers, as kniphofia are affectionately known, which - true to its rather lengthy moniker - produces a succession of reddish orange pokers with bases in a yummy vanilla shade. It will do this over an extended period from mid-summer to autumn, much longer than traditional varieties. Nice elegant grassy foliage, too. Likes some sun. Any reasonable soil. 24 in. 1 litre pot.

Kniphofia Orange Vanilla Popsicle is just the thing for the average garden where some of the usual suspects might get a big too big. Not just that, but whereas most other kniphofias tend to have short flowering season, this one is a repeat bloomer and will continue to surprise you by popping up fresh flowerheads just when you think it’s all over. We like it a lot.

Orange Vanilla Popsicle was introduced to the market in 2010 by the originators Terra Nova Nurseries; it’s one of a series (currently of six) with ice lolly related names and you can find out about them all here.

Care is limited in scope. We recommend cutting back old flower spikes to the base to encourage reblooming and we tend to chop back the foliage to about half (or as you prefer) in the interests of tidiness, generally in early spring.

This video is of the Papaya member of the popsicle series but gives you some idea of how its stablemate OVP looks.

Kniphofia Orange Vanilla Popsicle is a hardy evergreen perennial plant with grassy leaves and orange and cream poker flowers all summer suitable for full sun.
