READY SOON. Nepeta is, of course, catmint but we are in big cat territory here, as Blue Dragon forms a good sized upright shrubby plant with masses of showy blue flowers, rather like those of a penstemon, all summer long. Lovely forest green foliage to set things off nicely. Full sun. Any reasonable soil. 36 in. 1 litre pot.

Our cat Tango, who does like his catnip, will happily sit for hours in front of these plants in the sales area, just sticking his nose in the foliage from time to time!

Nepeta Blue Dragon is an introduction from the prolific plant breeders at Terra Nova Nurseries in the USA, arriving on the market in 2011. We have seen it designated as a cultivar of various species, but Terra Nova themselves give it as being from Nepeta Yunnanensis, a species originating in the Yunnan province of China. Blue Dragon is more compact and floriferous than the parent species, and Terra Nova suggest that, on account of the particularly large flowers, we think of it as an everblooming penstemon. Ok. We will. The genus name is thought to be taken from the ancient Etruscan city of Nepete, but quite why seems to be uncertain.

Plant care is not difficult: cut back before winter sets in, and provide an occasional trim back during the growing season to encourage reblooming.

Nepeta Blue Dragon is a hardy upright perennial with scented leaves and whorls of large blue tubular flowers in summer suitable for full sun.
