SUMMERINA (ECHIBECKIA) PECAN PIE

SUMMERINA (ECHIBECKIA) PECAN PIE

from 5.00

AVAILABLE EARLY SUMMER 2019. A new addition to the Summerina series involving an intergenetic cross between Rudbeckia and Echinacea, Pecan Pie will flower relentlessly once it gets going, basically through the months of July, August and September, with 3 inch blooms of golden petals shading to chocolate at the centres around a black cone. A really interesting alternative to the original introductions, which have duller names like Orange and Brown.  Sun or semi-shade. Any reasonable soil. 2 to 3 feet. 1 litre or 2 litre pot.

Echibeckia is a bit of a mouthful: Summerina sounds rather nicer, we think. And as for Pecan Pie, well, that’s simply scrumptious. Good to see a bit of imagination creeping into the naming of these newer introductions to the Summerina series. Aside from Pecan Pie, the range now boasts other delicious varieties such as Butterscotch and Pumpernickel.

Even Echibeckia is a bit of a misnomer, or at least marketing speak: the correct terminology should be x Rudbeckia. Whatever. These hybrids are the results of crosses between Rudbeckia hirta and Echinacea purpurea, call them what you will.

As with Echinaceas, plant with the crown at or just above soil level and make sure the soil or compost is freedraining, as Summerina don't like soggy winter conditions. They don't need protection, so don't mulch, as this will create the very conditions they dislike!

Echibeckia Summerina Pecan Pie is a hardy perennial with large yellow and chocolate brown flowers from early summer to autumn suitable for sun or semi-shade.
