Postman is one of the Butterfly series by echinacea guru Arie Blom and the flowers are certainly what we might call pillar box red, so the name is not too wide of the mark. A real beacon in the garden from midsummer to autumn. Sun or semi-shade. Well drained soil. 18 in. Available in a 1 litre and 2 litre pot.
Just to be clear, the postman epithet is in fact nothing to do with the daily mail round, but refers to Heliconius melpomene, a.k.a. the postman butterfly, a native of Central and South America which lays its eggs on passion flower plants, the leaves of which are the staple diet of the caterpillars. So now you know.
The Dutch breeder Arie Blom is one of the big names in recent echinacea development, starting to hybridise these plants back in 2002. We think Pink Double Delight was the first echinacea hybrid he brought to market.
We always assumed the Dutch nursery AB Cultivars was where Arie Blom plied his trade (AB, Arie Blom, and the key Echinacea hybrids are listed in their catalogue) but he is not mentioned in the 'About' section of the website, so now we are feeling rather confused about the whole thing!
Echinacea Postman is a hardy perennial with pillar box red flowers with brown cones from summer into autumn suitable for sun or semi-shade.
