ERYNGIUM NEPTUNE'S GOLD

ERYNGIUM NEPTUNE'S GOLD

from 4.50

One of the stars of the 2014 Chelsea Flower Show when it was introduced, Eryngium Neptune's Gold is certainly unique:unlike any other sea holly it has luminescent yellow foliage tinged with lime and contrasting spiky blue flowers on blue stems in mid to late summer. Not for the faint hearted. Full sun. Any well drained soil. 18 to 24 in. 2 litre pot.

The story of Neptune's Gold goes back to 2008, when Neil Alcock of Seiont Nurseries in Wales discovered a yellow-leaved seedling eryngium in his own garden. Realising it had potential, he developed it in conjunction with a tissue culture laboratory in Europe. In due course the new variety was introduced by Hardy's Plants at Chelsea in 2014 (see upcoming video). It was Rosy Hardy who came up with the highly appropriate name of Neptune's Gold. The plant even has its own website which you can visit here.

Care is straightforward: all that is needed is to cut it back after flowering and before winter sets in.

We (Rob in particular) weren't so sure about this particular colour combination, but on balance we think it works. It certainly seems to be popular!

Eryngium x Zabelii Neptune's Gold is a hardy perennial plant with golden yellow leaves and spiky electric blue flowers in mid to late summer suitable for full sun.
