Gerbera Jamesonii, otherwise known as the Barberton daisy or the Transvaal daisy, has long been a staple of summer bedding on account of its long lasting flowers and continuous blooming. Hailing from South Africa, however, hardiness was not its strong point.

Some years ago breeders in Holland developed the Garvinea series which retained all the qualities of the parent species but added winter hardiness to the mix. The Sweet series, which has been brought to the market more recently, represents a further improvement with larger flowers than the original hardy varieties.

Hardy they may be, but there are two keys to success with Garvinea gerberas: (1) ensure they are planted in well drained soil (2) plant them crown high to avoid the heart of the plant getting waterlogged during winter dormancy. As with so many plants, it's winter wet that kills, not winter cold.

Gerbera Garvinea Sweet Dreams is a compact hardy perennial with hot pink daisy like flowers in spring, summer and autumn suitable for sun or semi-shade.
