AVAILABLE EARLY SUMMER 2019. A fairly recent introduction, one of a series of geums named after cocktail drinks, Alabama Slammer (see?) has the usual evergreen clump of slightly hairy serrated evergreen leaves and wiry burgundy red stems bearing semi-double flowers, all ruffles and frills, in a lovely shade of gold shaded with orangey red. A little stunner. Sun or semi-shade. Any reasonable soil. 18 in. 1 litre pot.

We will certainly raise a glass to this little beauty. We wonder if geums are shaping up to be the next big thing, given the number of new varieties that are appearing in recent times. No denying they are easy and reliable performers.

Brent Horvath, President of Intrinsic Perennial Gardens in Hebron, Illinois, is a prolific breeder of geums and is the man responsible for the Cocktail series which includes Alabama Slammer. He and his team can have brought in quite a few other introductions: you can see a list of them here.

Not much is required in the way of plant care other than to remove spent flowerheads to keep things going and tidy up the evergreen foliage in the early spring. We find that tearing off some of the older winter-damaged leaves around the outer edges of the clump will let the new growth come through and refresh the plant.

Geum Alabama Slammer is a  hardy evergreen perennial with serrated leaves and semi-double gold flowers shaded red in summer suitable for sun or semi-shade.
