AVAILABLE EARLY SUMMER 2020. Perhaps our favourite of this geum series named after cocktail drinks, Cosmopolitan has the usual evergreen clump of slightly hairy serrated leaves and wiry burgundy red stems bearing semi-double flowers, all ruffles and frills, in a lovely creamy shade edged with rosy pink. Absolutely lovely. Sun or semi-shade. Any reasonable soil. 18 in. 1 litre pot.
The Cosmopolitan cocktail, from which this attractive geum takes its name, was very much an on trend drink in the 1990s: usually shortened informally to a ‘cosmo’, it featured heavily in the hit tv series Sex and The City and built up a following among fans of the show and, presumably, beyond. If it really matters, its key ingredients are vodka, cointreau (or similar orange liqueur), cranberry juice and lime juice. Perhaps just the thing for an early summer evening on the patio, admiring your geums?
Cosmopolitan enjoys a prolonged flowering period from late spring through to early or mid summer and, if you keep removing the spent flowering stems, it may surprise you with the odd later flurry. As a geum, it is pretty much evergreen so will maintain its presence in pot or border through the winter months. Tear off some of the old leaves in early spring to let the new ones replace them.
Geum Cosmopolitan is a compact evergreen hardy perennial with serrated leaves and semi-double cream and pink flowers in summer suitable for sun or semi-shade.
