Yes, you can eat your own figs! Grow Ficus Carica Brown Turkey against a sunny wall or as a shrub or small tree in a sheltered spot: small fruit form in autumn and overwinter to ripen the following year. The large divided leaves are lovely in themselves. Everyone should have one. Fertile, moist but well drained soil. 6 feet +. 2 litre pot.

Conventional wisdom will tell you to restrict the roots of figs. We used to do this, but find that not doing so produces better results! Prune back a third of the framework pretty hard each year in spring for best results.

The Romans liked their figs and some of the best specimens (mostly grown as freestanding shrubs)we have seen are to be found in the gardens of the Roman palace at Fishbourne on the south Hampshire coast.
