UGNI MOLINAE KA-POW

UGNI MOLINAE KA-POW

from 5.00

Forget the perhaps rather oddball name, Ugni Ka-Pow! is a fabulous shrub: evergreen, with pendant bowl-shaped white flowers of pinkish white (even better, they're scented!), followed by small red fruits that look like blueberries (ok, ok, we know blueberries aren't red) and taste like wild strawberries. A plant that seemingly has it all. And no, there isn't really a catch. It is that good. Sun or semi-shade. Any reasonable soil. To 5 feet. 2 litre or 10cm pot.

Ugni used to be known as Myrtus Ugni and is of the myrtle family. Ugni Molinae is commonly known as Chilean guava and it is said that it was Queen Victoria's favourite fruit.

Pruning is generally straightforward and normally consists of trimming back to maintain the desired shape as and when is appropriate.

The variety Ka-Pow! (the name is presumably meant to call on our memories of reading Batman comics or, indeed, for those of us of a certain age, watching the 60s television series) is a new introduction named by writer and broadcaster James Wong. This video tells you a little more about it:

Ugni Molinae Ka-Pow is a hardy evergreen shrub with pendant urn shaped pinkish white flowers followed by edible red fruit suitable for sun or semi-shade.
